Form 5500 is a report containing financial, investment and operational information about employee benefit plans, including those plans that participate in the ABA Retirement Funds Program (“the Program”).

  • Plans with fewer than 100 participants as of the beginning of the plan year may file Form 5500-SF (short form) while plans with 100 or more participants as of the beginning of the plan year file the full Form 5500.
  • Owner-only plans may not have to file at all unless their plan balance exceeds $250,000.
  • For plan years ending on December 31, Form 5500 must be filed before July 31* of the following year using the U.S. Department of Labor’s EFAST2 system.

How can the Program help?
The Program prepares a signature-ready Form 5500 for your review and provides filing instructions and credentials to plan administrators via email on or about June 15. Please look for more information to come in late May, and visit the Form 5500 Filing Information in the Resources section of the Program’s website at www.abaretirement.com.

*Form 5558 (Application for Extension of Time to File Certain Employee Plan Returns) is also prepared and uploaded with the Form 5500 in the event a plan sponsor wishes to request an extension of time with the IRS.
